12.04.10 thrift digs

I’ve been collecting old music text books for probably 20 years. While hoarding them I’ve actually learned a lot. Here’s one I just picked up, Choral Arranging by Hawley Ades, a 1966 first edition.

From Shawnee Press Inc., Delaware Water Gap, PA. Love the design.

Added bonus: Inside was a mimeographed SATB arrangement of something called “Pretty Girl in the Ring.”

The only "Pretty Girl in the Ring" I can find on the web is some tropical tune by a Reggie Paul. I don't think it's the same thing.

I also found a receipt from the University of Missouri Kansas City book store possibly from 1986. Now, to learn the principles of part writing.

  1. I have an old textbook that my brother had in junior high called “Understanding Music” or something like that. Folded inside the book is a handwritten letter I received from Steve Vai back in 1984, in response to my letter to him, where I told him how much I enjoyed “Flex-Able” (still the only Vai album I really like).

  2. THAT is too cool. Scan & post?
